Why you shouldn’t consider an implant procedure abroad based on cost alone.
There is no denying that dental implants are not a cheap option for replacing missing teeth.
The materials used, and the extra skills and training that are required to place them does mean that they can be more expensive than dentures or a bridge. The benefits though are well worth it, allowing you to have replacement teeth that are as close to the real thing as is currently possible.
Because cost is a factor in some people’s decisions about which method to choose, this can lead to them following up the various dental implant special offers that are regularly advertised. By and large, these are from dentists in other countries, and, whilst there are obviously some excellent dentists abroad, the reality is that this may not always be the case, and you could be taking risks with your health if you respond to these adverts.
At the Confidental Clinic in Clapham, we feel that our patients should be aware of the potential risks of taking this route, and below, we offer some good reasons why you should think twice (or more) before taking up these offers.
Inferior Implants – If the price of implant placement is cheap, that almost certainly means that corners have had to be cut somewhere and this may well be in the quality of the implants themselves. This is important as only titanium is recommended to bond with the bone in the jaw to give your implant stability. Inferior quality materials may well mean that your implant will fail, so we only use highest quality implants here at our Clapham dental practice.
Dentistry skills – All dentists in the UK have to be trained to a very high standard. In addition to this, a number of extra years training are required to be able to place dental implants for patients. If you use a registered UK dentist, you can be sure that they will be qualified to perform the procedure. Standards and requirements may not be the same abroad and you could end up having the procedure done by an inexperienced dentist, with the potentially serious consequences this could bring.
Communication and aftercare – Although there is a good chance that English will be spoken by the dentist abroad, it may not be at the level that is required for you to communicate effectively with them. The communication between the dentist and patient is something that we value at the Confidental Clinic and, except in a dental emergency perhaps, few people would be happy having dental surgery performed by someone they could not communicate with.
It is also important to remember that implants require monitoring and aftercare and this is usually carried out by the dentist who placed the implants. This could prove to be very expensive in the long run when the cost of flights and hotels are taken into account. Many dentists in the UK are, understandably, reluctant to offer aftercare for dental implants that have been placed in these circumstances.
Because dental implants offer such an excellent means of replacing any lost teeth, we feel that our patients should have every opportunity to have them if they so wish. In addition to offering a free implant consultation at our practice, we also offer finance plans that are designed to help patients spread the cost of treatment. Before you respond to an advert for discount dental implants, please contact the Confidental Clinic to see how we can help you have a safe and successful local procedure, and to spread the cost as well.
