Your Oral Health – Room For Improvement?

Make 2016 a new start for better oral health care.

For many of us, the Christmas tree is up, presents wrapped and the turkey ready for the oven and all most people have on their minds at this moment is the Christmas day spent with friends and family. Once the festivities are over though and all that is left are TV repeats of Christmas specials, many of us start to turn our minds towards the New Year and our hopes and expectations for it. Many of us will, perhaps, even put pen to paper and make a list of New Year resolutions.

At the Confidental Clinic in Clapham Junction, we thought this might be a good time to offer up a few ideas to add to that list to keep your teeth not only healthy, but looking fantastic too.

Reduce sugar

Although sugar tastes good and makes us feel good, at least for a short while, you won’t find a single medical expert that claims it is good for you. In fact, as well as being a major cause of obesity, it is also a significant factor in diabetes, which in itself presents oral health problems. In addition to this, as we well know, sugar is a major factor in tooth decay and reducing it will be of major benefit for everyone.

Smoking is a habit that most of us now recognise as very harmful. From a dental perspective too, it is the leading cause of oral cancers which can even prove to be fatal. Even those escaping oral cancer though are likely to find that they have a higher incidence of gum disease than non smokers, largely due to the dry mouth syndrome that it causes.

Dental floss is cheap, and, although some people do find flossing tricky to perform, it is well worth persevering with. There are also interdental sticks available which perform the same function, and some people find these easier to use. The addition of dental floss to your daily routine will help to remove both food and bacteria from between the teeth, keeping them free from decay and gingivitis.

Keep dental appointments

Patients from the Battersea and Clapham Junction area who have either skipped an appointment or have not seen a dentist for some time, should add this to their New Year list. Seeking professional dental care is one of the best ways to ensure that your teeth and gums remain healthy for a longer time.
