Gum Reshaping

Even with great teeth, excess gum can leave us with an unattractive smile.

Recently on the Confidental Clinic blogs we have discussed the importance of having healthy gums, free from gum disease. One possible consequence of gingivitis (early stage gum disease) is receding gums which can progressively expose the root of the tooth. For some patients though, the opposite of this is the problem.

A “gummy smile” is more common than you might expect and occurs where the gum is present in excess and sits too low on the teeth. This condition is unrelated to gum disease and is largely genetically inherited, although other causes such as abnormal eruption of the teeth can also contribute. By and large, there are no preventable causes of this and the only option available is treatment.

Why bother?

The effect of a gummy smile can be determined by a number of factors; how significant it is, the person’s facial shape or the length of their teeth. There are no practical problems with excess gum material but, for many, it looks unpleasant and often leaves them reluctant to smile. The good news is that at our Clapham cosmetic dental practice, we are able to treat this aesthetic problem with a straightforward procedure referred to as a gum lift or gum reshaping.

Laser treatment

To reshape the gums and reveal more of the tooth, we use a laser treatment, both for accuracy but also the fact that, with a laser, there is little bleeding as the laser cauterises the blood vessels as it removes the gum. As discomfort would otherwise be felt, a local anaesthetic will be given to make the procedure more comfortable. Inevitably, you will feel a little soreness for a day or so following the procedure and salt water rinses are recommended, along with your usual painkiller medication if you feel the need.

Our dentists will remove the gum a little at a time, taking care to leave your gum line even and avoid exposing the root part of the tooth.

Once the discomfort has subsided, we are sure that you will be delighted with the results. Even the removal of just a small amount of the gum line can make a dramatic difference to a smile. Although it is a relatively straightforward procedure, it is one that many people with a gummy smile may not even be aware of. If your dentist does not offer cosmetic dentistry, you could live your life unaware of the difference this simple procedure that we offer at the Confidental Clinic in Clapham could make to your smile.

If you have excess gum which you would like removing, please call us on 020 7801 9060 to arrange an appointment to discuss this with one of our cosmetic dental team.
